What Affects the Price

Your product's design is more than just its appearance—it is a valuable business asset. A unique design helps customers recognize your product and sets it apart from competitors. By registering your product design, you gain legal protection for its visual appearance, protect against unauthorized copying, and strengthen your position in the marketplace. It also creates a valuable IP asset that enables licensing, assignment, or sale for additional business opportunities.

Design Registration — Common Questions

What is the difference between a Trademark and Design Registration?

A Trademark protects your brand name, logo, slogan, or symbol, whereas Design Registration protects the visual appearance of your product.

Can I register a product that is already being sold?

If the design has already been made public before filing, it may not qualify for registration. It is always advisable to apply before launching your product.

Does Design Registration protect the product's technology?

No. Design Registration protects only the appearance of a product. If you wish to protect the technical functionality or invention, you may need Patent protection.

Can an individual apply for Design Registration?

Yes. Individuals, startups, MSMEs, partnership firms, LLPs, and companies can all apply.

Can I transfer or license my registered design?

Yes. A registered design is an intellectual property asset that can be licensed, assigned, or transferred according to applicable laws.
